What you can expect

Begin your trip with a relaxing visit to Kostenets Mineral Baths, a serene spa area known for its naturally hot mineral springs. The mineral water here has been used since Roman times for its healing properties. Surrounded by forests and fresh mountain air, the area offers a perfect place to relax, recharge, and enjoy nature.

The stop for relaxation will be at the hotel complex “Ezeroto.” There you will have a total of 4 hours to enjoy thermal mineral pools with warm water, a sauna, and a relax zone. The hotel also has a restaurant, which serves traditional local meals.

This region has long inspired Bulgarian writers and intellectuals, including the famous poet Ivan Vazov. Known as the “Patriarch of Bulgarian Literature,” Vazov often spent time in the area, drawing inspiration from its peaceful landscapes, flowing rivers, and mountain scenery. It’s easy to see why—there’s a quiet, reflective atmosphere that invites creativity and calm.

Next, continue your journey with a visit to Trajan’s Gate Fortress, a strategic mountain pass that witnessed one of the most dramatic clashes between the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires.

In 986 AD, the Byzantine Emperor Basil II retreated through this narrow corridor after a failed siege of Sofia. Waiting for him was Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria, who used the terrain to launch a devastating ambush from the surrounding slopes. The result was a crushing Byzantine defeat—an event that shaped the balance of power in the Balkans.

As you walk along the ancient walls, you’ll not only see history—you’ll feel the strategic importance of this natural passage.

After a great day of relaxation and exploration, you will be back in Sofia in the late afternoon.
