Within the castle area, explore the peaceful Yasaka Shrine, a local shrine believed to bring good fortune, protection, and strong relationships. It offers a calm atmosphere for a short cultural stop and traditional Japanese experience. Optionally visit the elegant Kokura Castle Garden, a classic Japanese strolling garden designed with seasonal landscapes, ponds, and walking paths that reflect the beauty of traditional garden design. A combined ticket is available for entry. Also nearby is the Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum, dedicated to one of Japan’s most famous authors. Next, visit Miyajidake Shrine, a powerful spiritual site known for its peaceful atmosphere and impressive cultural landmarks. One of its most famous features is the “Path of Light” (Hikari no Michi)—a rare and breathtaking phenomenon where the sunset aligns perfectly with the shrine’s long stone approach, creating a glowing path of light leading towards the sea. It is one of Japan’s most photographed spiritual moments. Visitors can also admire Japan’s largest Shimenawa rope, a massive sacred straw rope weighing around 3 tonnes, symbolising protection and connection with the divine. The shrine grounds also include the Eight Shrine Circuit, where multiple smaller shrines are dedicated to different blessings such as business success, safety, relationships, and academic achievement.
