Yes, Japanese hot spring etiquette requires that you wash your body thoroughly before entering the bath. Swimming is done nude; swimming costumes or towels are not permitted in the water. Long hair should be tied up or covered with a towel. If you have tattoos, please cover them or rent a private bath.
