The SSI Open Water Diver Course combines online learning, classroom sessions, and in-water training to prepare you for an incredible underwater adventure. Complete the online training and then join a qualified SSI Instructor for theory, pool training, and ocean dives.
Before you join, book your SSI Open Water Diver Course and complete the payment. Register on the SSI System to access your Digital Learning Material and begin your training anytime, anywhere using the MySSI app.
Step 1: Complete the Digital Learning Material, which is self-paced and accessible offline after downloading. This must be completed before attending the Academic Class.
Step 2: Attend the Academic & Pool Session. Meet your instructor and take part in a classroom session and written exam. Learn how to set up scuba equipment and take part in pool training and a fitness test.
Step 3: Take part in Open Water Training. On day 2, take part in two open water dives with a maximum depth of 12 metres. Dive times depend on the tidal chart and weather. Follow this with a debrief and dive log.
On day 3, take part in two open water dives with a maximum depth of 18 metres. Dive times depend on the tidal chart and weather. Follow this with a debrief, dive log, and graduation.
After registering for the SSI Open Water Diver Course, log in to your profile and select Personal Data, then Training & Documents. Complete the Responsible Diver Code and the Medical Statement. If you answer “yes” to certain questions on the Medical Form, Medical Clearance is required.
You’ll need to obtain a diving medical (AS4005.1) if you fall into any of these categories:
- Have an at-risk medical condition
- Are over 45 years of age
- Have a BMI over 30 and a waist circumference greater than 102cm (males) or 88cm (females)
The diving medical takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately $140–$180. It must be completed by a registered diving doctor before you can begin in-water training.
