Lagos State is a state in southwestern Nigeria. Out of the 36 states, it is the second most populous state. Lagos was the capital of Nigeria from 1914 up to 1991. The city was stripped of its status when Abuja was established as the purpose-built capital in the Federal Capital Territory.
