What you can expect

Discover Gabii, a remarkably preserved archaeological site just 20 kilometres east of Rome along the historic Via Prenestina. Nestled beside the now-dried volcanic Lake Castiglione, this ancient Latin city offers an authentic window into life before and during Rome's rise to power.

The excavations have brought to light the remains of the tuff walls in opus quadratum and some important buildings including the forum, consisting of a porticoed square open on the ancient via Prenestina, the temple of Juno Gabina, the so-called regia, that is a residence of the sixth century BC and an extra-urban sanctuary.

Gabii thrived during the Roman Republican period but began its decline in the 1st century BC. During the Imperial era, the city met an unusual fate—it became a quarry, with tuff stone extracted from its very foundations due to its fire-resistant properties. The city was finally abandoned in the mid-11th century.

Paradoxically, this abandonment became Gabii's salvation. Centuries of agricultural use protected the ruins from development, preserving them in exceptional condition for modern discovery.

These special pre-opening tours offer unprecedented access to an active archaeological site. Experience Gabii in its raw, unpolished state—exactly as archaeologists are uncovering it—before it transforms into a formal tourist attraction in September 2026.
