What you can expect

  • Discover Qingyan Ancient Town, a historic stone town on the outskirts of Guiyang with centuries of military, cultural, and architectural heritage.
Founded during the Ming Dynasty in 1381, Qingyan originally developed as a military settlement guarding routes through southwest China. Over the centuries, it grew into a thriving town while preserving its distinctive stone architecture, old city walls, temples, courtyards, memorial halls, and narrow lanes.
Begin your exploration around Dingguang Gate, one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks. The old city wall follows the surrounding hills, offering elevated views across layers of traditional grey-tiled rooftops and the historic town below.
Wander through Qingyan’s maze of stone-paved streets and discover Back Street, one of the town’s most atmospheric lanes. High stone walls and polished stone paving create a distinctive setting for photography and offer a glimpse into the town’s historic character.
Continue past traditional stone archways, courtyards, temples, and old residences. Depending on your selected option, you may visit cultural landmarks such as the Former Residence of Zhao Yijiong, Guizhou’s first Zhuangyuan — the highest-ranking scholar in China’s imperial examination system.
Other historic sites around the ancient town include Ciyun Temple, Longquan Temple, traditional guild halls, shrines, and preserved residences that reflect Qingyan’s diverse cultural history.
For travellers interested in local history, select a cultural experience focusing on Qingyan’s Zhuangyuan heritage. Learn more about the storey of Zhao Yijiong and, depending on the selected option, enjoy a cultural performance at the historic Sichuan Guild Hall.
Some options also include a sightseeing train, providing a convenient and relaxing way to experience more of the scenic area.
Beyond its historic sites, Qingyan is also known for its lively food culture. Walk along the high streets and discover local specialities such as braised pork trotters, tofu balls, potato cakes, and traditional sweet snacks.
Allow around 2–3 hours for a relaxed visit focused on the streets, architecture, and photography. Travellers who want to explore more historic interiors and cultural attractions can allow approximately 4 hours or more.
Choose the option that best matches your interests and discover Qingyan through its stone architecture, historic streets, local culture, and centuries-old heritage.
