Overview

The Jewish community in India is comprised of 03 distinct groups: Bene Israel, The Malabar Jewish community and the Iraqi Jews. Their history dates back to over 2000 years ago where there is evidence listed on the cemeteries in Hebrew. Today the community has shrunk considerably; however, there is a large community still active to share the history with us. This programme combines both Jewish histories (as we go the beaten track to explore this remarkable culture) with the traditional Indian temples and palaces through the land of the Maharajas.

The synagogue was built in 1796 and is one of the oldest synagogues in Mumbai. It was established by the Bene Israel community, who have a long and storied history in India, dating back to the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

It is the second-oldest Bene Israel synagogue in Mumbai. Built in 1843.It was established due to a split in the management of the earlier synagogue, Shaar Harahamim (“Gate of Mercy”). Some members disagreed and formed a new congregation, which built Shaare Rason (“Gate of Desire” or “Gate of Will”).

Chabad India

The Nariman House, designated as a Chabad house (Hebrew: בית חב"ד) is a five-storey landmark in the Colaba area of South Mumbai. The building was home to a Chabad house, a Hasidic Jewish outreach centre run by Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who had owned the building since around 2006. The centre had an educational centre, a synagogue, offered drug prevention services and a hostel. The building was one of the sites of the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and six of its occupants, including Holtzberg and his wife, who was six months pregnant, were killed. Their two-year-old son Moshe survived the attack after being rescued by his Indian nanny, Sandra Samuel.

Jewish Cemetery
