JURAKU is a rare 150-year-old former silk merchant's house located in the sacred Nishijin textile district. Once the childhood home of renowned art historian Taichiro Kobayashi, this fascinating two-story building still preserves its precious antique furniture, elegant lacquerware, and classic paintings.
We opened in February 2026 to share authentic Japanese culture. By visiting us, you directly contribute to the preservation of this historic architecture and Kyoto's cultural heritage.
Away from the tourist crowds, you can experience the following:
■ Guided Machiya Tour & Cultural Immersion:
Before the tea ceremony, explore our historic house. Learn about its unique architecture and the history of the Nishijin merchants. This is a quiet encounter with living culture, not a staged performance.
■ Authentic, Beginner-Friendly Tea Ceremony:
Seated comfortably on chairs, watch a live table-style tea ceremony. Guided by a practitioner with 16 years of training, you will enjoy clear English explanations of each movement.
■ Hands-on Matcha Preparation:
Guided step-by-step, prepare your own matcha using traditional utensils at a rare ““Misonodana”” tea shelf. Discover the meaning behind each graceful action and enjoy the tea you have made.
■ Top-Grade Matcha & Seasonal Sweets:
Your tea is served with practitioner-only matcha and beautiful seasonal plant-based (halal-friendly) sweets.
We provide a calm, small-group setting (max 7 guests) where you can focus on the beauty of the experience.
