The Brazilian Way of St. James, officially recognised by the Cathedral of Santiago in Spain, is a spiritual and cultural journey of approximately 22 kilometres through the northern part of Santa Catarina Island in Florianópolis. The hike combines self-discovery, trails and stunning beaches, offering a unique experience of connection with nature, local culture and spirituality. Along the way, walkers pass by four churches, four beaches and two trails, on an itinerary that offers moments of reflection and personal triumph.
The journey begins at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Canasvieiras, where pilgrims receive safety information and details about the journey. The route continues along the Canasvieiras waterfront, taking advantage of the peaceful beaches up to Cachoeira do Bom Jesus Beach, offering a gentle and pleasant start. The next stop is St. Peter's Church in Ponta das Canas, a chapel that honours the local fishermen. Then, the route continues to Lagoinha Beach, known for its paradisiacal setting and calm waters.
The first hiking tour on the route is Morro do Rapa, at an altitude of 160 metres. The climb is challenging, but the panoramic view from the top rewards the effort. During the hike, you can spot local wildlife, such as the blue jay and marmoset monkeys. The vegetation of the Atlantic Forest is also captivating, offering complete immersion in nature.
After descending the hill, you'll reach Praia Brava, and from there, the second hiking tour begins: Morro das Feiticeiras (Hill of the Sorceresses). This part of the forest is steeped in local stories about witches and sorceresses, linking the sacred to the mystical. The descent leads to Praia dos Ingleses, where the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, founded in 1839, marks another important historical site. Along the way, pilgrims have the chance to experience the local culture, with its strong connection to the sea and spirituality.
The hike ends at the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ingleses, where they receive their pilgrim credential. This symbolic moment marks the end of the journey. The licensed guide shares information about the history of the churches, the fishing culture and the significance of the Camino de Santiago, further enriching the experience.
