What you can expect

Venture to the end of the Barra peninsula where the historic Portuguese fort, Barra Lighthouse (Farol da Barra), sits overlooking All Saints Bay. There you can explore a small museum filled with pictures, charts, maps, and ancient artefacts recovered from sunken European ships.

Pass the Teatro Castro Alves and learn about the country's lively theatre culture dating back to the early 1800s. Journey past the many 16th century, baroque-style architecture buildings and listen as your knowledgeable guide spouts fascinating facts about the city's history—pointing out landmarks along the way.

Next, visit Forte de São Pedro, a masonry stone fort utilised in war for hundreds of years. The last stop is at the Praça Castro Alves statue in the central part of the old city centre. Marvel at the triumphant monument, learn about its historic significance, and gaze out at the scenic harbour.
