What you can expect

  • The tour starts in front of the current City Hall, located in the former monastic buildings of the Abbaye aux Hommes, founded by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century. Often attacked, destroyed and then rebuilt, Caen is today a true historical patchwork, where an 18th-century square adjoins medieval streets with traditional half-timbered houses. The castle is another highlight of the tour; its fortified walls are among the largest in Europe, and were recently renovated for the millennium celebrations. A walk along the ramparts offers a chance to admire the panorama of the city.
Depending on the option chosen and the day of the tour, we will visit at least one of the city's main religious monuments (Saint-Pierre Church, Saint-Jean Church, Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames). Passing by the University and the statue of the Phoenix, which celebrates the city's rebirth after the bombings of 1944, we will return to the starting point via the Saint-Julien moats, the remains of the medieval city walls.
