Immerse yourself in the traditional craft of Vietnamese rice wine at a family-run distillery in the peaceful countryside of Hoi An. This workshop is hosted by a family who has preserved the art of “rượu gạo” for over three generations, offering a unique insight into the cultural heritage and time-honored techniques of this delicate craft.
Upon arrival, enjoy a warm welcome and learn about the family’s history and the cultural significance of rice wine in Vietnam. You’ll admire their collection of aged wine bottles, each telling a storey of craftsmanship and pride in local traditions.
The hands-on workshop allows you to participate in every step of the distillation process: preparing the rice and yeast, initiating fermentation, setting the pot, and observing the first drops of aromatic rice spirit. While the distillation progresses, you’ll also learn to make crispy fried spring rolls, guided by the family, combining culinary fun with cultural learning.
Next, discover the art of blending and adjusting alcohol levels. Experiment with local herbs, forest fruits, and spices to create your own personalised infused rice wine. Taste your creation fresh from the still and appreciate how subtle flavours develop with each ingredient.
The experience concludes with a relaxed tasting session, pairing your rice wine with rustic, home-cooked dishes while engaging in stories and traditions of Vietnamese drinking culture. Each participant receives a 250ml bottle of infused rice wine to take home- a meaningful souvenir capturing the authentic spirit of the region.
This workshop is a perfect mix of hands-on learning, culinary discovery, and cultural immersion, offering a memorable and personal experience that connects you directly with the living traditions of Hoi An.
