What you can expect

  • Join me on a walking tour of the Hürtgen Forest battlefield to explore the beautiful landscape of the North Eifel. In the autumn and winter of 1944/45, this landscape was transformed into a huge battlefield.
Discover the relics of this battle as you explore the former battlefield.
The West Wall, also known as the Siegfried Line, ran through this rugged wooded area with two lines. Numerous bunker ruins and anti-tank obstacles can still be found there today. These obstacles were also called the “Höckerlinie” (hump line); the Americans called them “The Dragon Teeth.”
Tours can be customised. As a full-day tour through the entire area, starting at the German–Belgian border near Roetgen and ending at the Rur near Düren. In between lies the former battle area of the Hürtgen Forest with its many secrets.

On every battlefield tour, we show you what the relevant locations and sites looked like at the time, using original photos from the period. Using maps and terrain sketches, we explain in detail the tactics and attacks, or the defence against the military operations.

As an additional attraction, we recommend exploring the “Hürtgenwald 1944 and in Peace” museum and the Westwall medical bunker in Simonskall. In the museum, you will find relics from the battles, including many donations and items on loan from those who took part in the fighting at the time. The medical bunker in Simonskall is the last medical bunker of the West Wall that remains in its original condition. Within these walls, which are a metre thick, and the ceiling, which is made of around 160 cm of reinforced concrete, you will experience the cramped nature of such facilities.

The two war cemeteries in Vossenack and Hürtgen are places of peace and quiet and offer space for reflection. A visit is highly recommended. Behind every grave cross lies the fate of a human being.
