What you can expect

  • Discover Irsina, one of Basilicata’s most authentic and undiscovered hilltop villages, where stone alleys, layered history, and breathtaking views create an unforgettable journey through time.

Begin in the heart of the historic centre at Piazza San Francesco, one of the most characteristic access points to the old town, where narrow streets suddenly open into quiet squares and every corner reflects centuries of medieval and Renaissance life.

From here, visit the Church of Saint Francesco, one of the most significant landmarks in Irsina. Built within what was once the Norman castle complex, the church preserves a remarkable hidden treasure: a medieval underground crypt located inside an ancient tower.

This hypogeum space is entirely decorated with frescoes from the Giotto-inspired school, dating back to around 1370. The paintings have retained their vivid colours and expressive detail, making this crypt a rare and powerful example of sacred medieval art, combining history, spirituality, and artistic mastery in an immersive atmosphere.

Walk through the labyrinth of stone streets and encounter one of the most surprising highlights of the village: Palazzo Policarpo, also known as the “Shell House.” This extraordinary and eclectic residence is entirely decorated with seashells and small stones, creating intricate and unexpected ornamental patterns on its façade. In recent years, it has gained significant cultural recognition and protection from FAI, becoming a symbol of Irsina’s creative and unconventional identity.

Continue to the majestic Cathedral of Saint Maria Assunta, a masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque architecture dominating the skyline of the village. From the exterior, admire its finely sculpted rose window, decorated portal, and imposing bell tower rising above the rooftops.

Inside, the cathedral reveals a solemn and artistic atmosphere enriched by sacred artworks, including the extraordinary statue of Saint Euphemia of Irsina, considered the only sculpture in the world attributed to Andrea Mantegna. The visit also includes access to the evocative crypt, reached via two scenic staircases, offering a hidden space of deep historical and spiritual significance.

End along the ancient defensive walls of Irsina, where the village appears suspended on its hilltop like a timeless fortress. Nearly fully walkable, these walls offer one of the most scenic viewpoints over the surrounding landscape, especially the stretch opening onto the valley. At sunset, the light transforms the scenery into golden tones over the Lucanian hills, creating one of the most breathtaking views in Basilicata.
