Sengan-en is a historic daimyo garden created in the 17th century by the Shimazu clan, rulers of the Satsuma Domain. Designed to incorporate the dramatic form of Sakurajima volcano as a borrowed landscape, the garden represents the refined aesthetics of Japanese garden culture. Beyond its beauty, Sengan-en also played a key role in Japan’s early modernization, as the surrounding area became a centre of industrial experimentation during the late Edo period.
