What you can expect

Your journey into the living craft heritage of Khiva begins with a personal pickup by your local guide and a walk through its storybook streets. As you wander beneath sun-warmed mudbrick walls, you’ll hear tales of the Khorezm Shahs, Silk Road merchants, master builders, and the quiet superstitions hidden in carved doorways — the kind of details most visitors never notice.

Inside the ancient walls of Ichan Kala, you’ll step into the workshop of Master Ergash, a hereditary woodcarver whose lineage stretches back generations. His great-grandfather once carved decorative elements for the Khan’s own palace, and today that same tradition lives on in the rhythmic tap of chisel against wood.

Khiva’s wood carving school is renowned across Central Asia for its deep-relief geometric and floral patterns — islimi and girih — each motif carrying symbolic meaning. The eight-pointed star reflects the cosmos, endless knots symbolise eternity, and flowing vines echo the paradise gardens of Persian poetry.

Your masterclass begins with an introduction to traditional Khorezm carving techniques and specialised hand tools. You’ll learn about local woods — fragrant, insect-resistant juniper, finely grained elm ideal for detail, and warm-toned mulberry — before selecting your own traditional pattern. Under the master’s guidance, you’ll practice chisel angles, mallet rhythm, and the art of reading the wood grain.

As you sand and finish your piece, tea is poured. Surrounded by half-finished columns and the scent of fresh shavings, you’ll share a quiet moment that feels suspended in time. What you take home is more than a souvenir — it’s a piece of living heritage, shaped by your own hands alongside a true master.
