What you can expect
Around a 8 hour ASO area custom tour. Begin your tour around the Mount Aso area, where you will explore the dramatic volcanic landscape that makes Aso one of the world’s largest calderas. Depending on volcanic activity and road conditions, visit Kusasenri Grassland, the Sunasenri volcanic area, scenic viewpoints around Mount Aso, and panoramic caldera roads.
At Kusasenri, your guide will explain how local people have maintained these grasslands through controlled burning (“Noyaki”), grazing culture, and coexistence with volcanic activity for centuries. This tour focuses on how volcanoes influence daily life in Aso, including agriculture, water, traditions, spirituality, disaster preparedness, and local identity.
For guests who would like additional activities, customise the day with optional experiences such as horse trekking at Kusasenri, short hiking routes to Mount Eboshi or other trails, or paragliding near Daikanbo. These optional activities are paid separately and arranged depending on weather and availability. The flexible structure allows guests to balance sightseeing, relaxation, and adventure at their own pace.
Lunch options are selected based on your preferences. Possible options include traditional meals like Akaushi wagyu beef, farm-to-table countryside cuisine, hidden cafés, vegetarian-friendly restaurants, and local dairy sweets. Because Aso is deeply connected to agriculture, food becomes another way to understand the region’s culture and daily life.
Rather than large resort-style hot springs, this tour focuses on authentic local onsen in areas such as Uchinomaki Onsen and Minamiaso village hot springs. Relax while enjoying rural landscapes and a slower pace of life. Instead of onsen, cafés or scenic walks are options too.
One unique feature of this tour is the opportunity to experience both the northern and southern sides of the Aso caldera. Depending on your interests, possible locations include Aso City Area, scenic drives around Mount Aso, Daikanbo viewpoint, local cafés with caldera views, Aso Shrine and local traditions, dairy farm experiences, local road stations, Minamiaso Area, Shirakawa Spring, Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, earthquake recovery stories around the New Aso Bridge, and forest and water landscapes. For guests interested in Japanese anime and pop culture, custom routes may include ONE PIECE statues connected to earthquake recovery projects as well.
What makes this experience different is the storytelling. Rather than rushing through sightseeing spots, this tour focuses on meaningful connections between landscape, history, culture, and local life. Topics may include why Aso’s grasslands exist, how controlled burning protects the ecosystem, volcanoes and water culture, local mythology and the “Land of Fire,” earthquake recovery and resilience, and sustainable tourism and rural life. The goal is not only to see Aso, but to understand it. Let's create a special plan that only a local can offer!
