What you can expect

  • Begin your day with a leisurely lunch at Yuxiang Garden Pig Trotter Rice Noodles, a beloved local spot in Baba Village Comprehensive Farmers' Market. Savour the rich flavours of pig trotters, braised for 12 hours, served with smooth rice noodles and secret chilli oil. Enjoy a relaxed meal, recharging for the afternoon ahead.

After lunch, head to the Yiliang Section of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway for a 5-hour light hike. Walk along the best-preserved section of the century-old meter-gauge railway, passing through dense forests, century-old bridges, and retro tunnels. The path is flat and easy, suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Take breaks at rest stops along the way to snap photos, chat, and relax. Local villagers sell snacks and drinks like roasted potatoes, corn, and mountain spring water to keep you energised. As you hike, admire the old railway relics and French-style buildings, blending outdoor leisure with a touch of history.

After the hike, head to Xuecheng Restaurant to enjoy the intangible cultural heritage delicacy of pine needle roast duck. The ducks are made from local free-range ducks, roasted in a pine needle braised oven. The skin is crispy and reddish, making a crunching sound when bitten. The meat is tender and juicy, rich in fat but not greasy — the most authentic Yiliang flavour. It can be paired with Dudu Shaomai (a kind of steamed dumpling) and local refreshing side dishes to unlock an authentic Yunnan-style set meal. Eating it right after roasting gives the best taste, and every bite is full of satisfaction.

After the meal, you can rest for a while, or buy vacuum-packed roast duck as a souvenir in the county town, then return easily.
