What you can expect

  • You will take your place on the tatami, the traditional Japanese floor mat and be met by your English-speaking host, who is a licensed tea master from Urasenke, the biggest school of tea ceremony in Japan.

First, watch as the host carries out the ceremonial preparation of matcha, powdered green tea. Then, you will have the chance to make tea yourself, while the host informs you about the history and spiritual role of the tea ceremony and the effects each tea-making method has on its flavour. Afterwards, savour some traditional Japanese sweets.

Once the ceremony has come to a close, you will have the chance to take photos and see examples of kimonos and beautiful woven textiles made in the Nishijin district of Kyoto. If you'd like to wear a kimono during the experience, you can select it as an add-on during booking and take photos to remember the experience.

Please choose the option that best matches your preference and the atmosphere you’d like to enjoy during your tea ceremony experience.

    • Private Ceremony Option
Enjoy an exclusive tea ceremony in a private setting, just for you and your group. Receive close attention from your tea master and experience the ritual at your own pace—perfect for couples, families, or those seeking a quiet and intimate moment.

    • Public Ceremony Option
Join a small group and share the cultural journey with other guests. This is a sociable, authentic experience where you’ll learn and enjoy the tea ceremony together, just like Japanese beginners would.

    • Candle Light Ceremony Option
Experience the tea ceremony by traditional candlelight. This special evening session recreates the peaceful ambiance of old Kyoto, making for a unique and atmospheric encounter after sunset. (Photo 4)

Tea Ceremony Koto has the concept that “We don’t arrange for the tourists but teach as same as Japanese beginners since 2015, when we opened this tea ceremony lesson.” To inform the real experience, we have to tell the basic rules for sure.
