Begin your cultural journey in Kyoto at Tondaya, a remarkable 140-year-old machiya officially recognised as a cultural landmark. As you step inside this traditional townhouse, you’ll immediately sense the spirit of old Kyoto, with its finely crafted woodwork, serene gardens, and a collection of captivating historical artefacts that tell centuries-old stories.
Upon entering Tondaya, multiple experienced kimono experts will assist you, efficently and beautifully fitting the kimono over your existing clothing, so you can enjoy a smooth and seamless experience.
You will also be guided through Tondaya, a machiya that is nationally recognised as an Important Cultural Property. Tondaya is a treasure trove of historically valuable artefacts and stories, and our knowledgeable staff look forward to sharing its rich history with you.
We will also prepare an authentic Japanese tea ceremony performed by a seasoned tea master. Tea is an inseparable part of Japanese culture. We offer a one-of-a-kind experience of watching a traditional tea ceremony performance in a historically significant machiya―truly immersing oneself in the atmosphere and history of tea ceremony culture.
