Activity itinerary

Hafenplatz

  • 10m
Your walking tour begins at Hafenplatz, the vibrant harbour square at the entrance to Lindau Island. This picturesque waterfront area immediately introduces you to the charm of Lake Constance and the historic atmosphere of the old town. From here, guests can enjoy panoramic lake views framed by alpine scenery while learning about Lindau’s importance as a medieval trading and fishing town.

Lighthouse and Bavarian Lion Sculpture

  • 10m
At the harbour entrance, admire Lindau’s most iconic landmarks: the impressive Bavarian Lion Statue and the historic New Lighthouse. The six-meter-tall lion, carved from Bavarian limestone, proudly guards the harbour while symbolising the Kingdom of Bavaria. Standing opposite is the elegant lighthouse, dating from the 19th century, which remains the southernmost lighthouse in Germany. This scenic location offers exceptional photo opportunities overlooking Lake Constance and the distant Alps.

Mangturm

  • 10m
Continue along the waterfront to the Mangturm, one of Lindau’s oldest surviving medieval towers. Distinguished by its colourful tiled roof, the tower once formed part of the city’s fortification system and served as an important watchtower protecting the harbour. Your guide will share fascinating stories about Lindau’s medieval defences and maritime history while you take in the charming lakeside surroundings.

Maximilianstraße

  • 10m
Stroll through Maximilianstrasse, Lindau’s elegant high street lined with beautifully preserved Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings. This lively promenade is filled with traditional Bavarian architecture, boutique shops, cafés, and historic façades decorated with ornate frescoes. As you walk through the heart of the old town, discover how Lindau flourished as a prosperous trading centre during the Holy Roman Empire.

Diebsturm

  • 10m
Your tour continues to the famous Diebsturm, or Thieves Tower, one of the oldest fortification towers on Lindau Island. Built around 1380, the tower once served as a prison for criminals and suspicious persons. Located at one of the island’s highest points, it provided an excellent strategic lookout over the surrounding area. The tower’s thick stone walls and fascinating history offer insight into medieval justice and security systems.

Peterskirche

  • 10m
Next, visit the Peterskirche, believed to be the oldest church in Lindau and dating back to the 12th century. Dedicated to Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, this small yet historically significant church contains remarkable medieval frescoes that are among the oldest in the Lake Constance region. The peaceful interior and preserved artwork provide a glimpse into the religious and artistic heritage of medieval Lindau.

Marktplatz

  • 10m
Continue to Marktplatz, the charming market square surrounded by colourful historic buildings and lively cafés. Here you will see the famous Haus zum Cavazzen, one of the finest Baroque townhouses in the region. Its beautifully decorated façade reflects Lindau’s prosperity during the 18th century and remains an architectural highlight of the old town.

Altes Rathaus

  • 10m
The tour proceeds to the magnificent Rathaus (Town Hall), one of Lindau’s most celebrated landmarks. Built between 1422 and 1436, the building is renowned for its striking painted façade featuring elaborate frescoes and decorative details. Historically, the Town Hall served as an important administrative centre and later housed the library of the Holy Roman Empire, preserving thousands of valuable historical books and manuscripts.

Munster Unserer Lieben Frau

  • 10m
A short walk brings you to the Münster Unserer Lieben Frau, Lindau’s largest church and an outstanding example of Baroque architecture. Its elegant interior, ornate decorations, and impressive ceiling artwork make it one of the cultural highlights of the island. Together with the neighbouring St. Stephan’s Church, it forms an important part of Lindau’s historic religious quarter.

Bismarckplatz (Pass by)

Your tour concludes at Bismarckplatz, a central square surrounded by elegant historic buildings and local cafés. This convenient location offers guests the perfect opportunity to continue exploring Lindau independently, enjoy refreshments by the lake, or relax while taking in the atmosphere of this beautiful Bavarian island town.
