We'll meet in the heart of the city and begin a relaxed walk towards Croix-Rousse, one of Lyon's most beloved areas. As we climb through its historic streets, I'll share stories about Lyon's rich culinary heritage, the traditions that shaped the city, and why food occupies such a special place in French culture. Along the way, you'll learn a few useful French phrases and the simple etiquette that helps turn a market visit from a transaction into a conversation.

Together, we'll wander among colourful stalls piled high with seasonal produce, artisan cheeses, crusty breads, charcuterie, and regional specialities. But what makes French food culture special isn't only what's on display, it's the people behind it.
In France, food is often deeply personal. The cheesemonger can tell you where a cheese comes from, how it was made, and who makes it. The baker rises before dawn to prepare the day's bread. The market vendors aren't simply selling products; they're sharing a craft, a tradition, and often a passion that has been passed down through generations.
We'll take our time, discover local specialities, sample a few treats, and choose the ingredients for our picnic together. Whether you're trying an unfamiliar cheese, asking a question in French, or hearing the storey behind a local delicacy, you'll experience a side of Lyon that many visitors never get to see.
There is no rush here. The goal isn't to see as much as possible; it's to experience something genuine.
Once we've gathered our provisions, we'll leave the bustle of the market behind and head to one of my favourite spots in the city. Hidden away from the crowds, it's a place locals treasure for its atmosphere, its beauty, and its remarkable view over Lyon.
There, we'll spread out our picnic and enjoy the simple pleasures that the French do so well: good food (and wine!) good company, and time to appreciate both.
As we share fresh bread, local cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal treats, and stories, you'll discover that French gastronomy is about much more than eating. It's about connection, to the land, to the people who produce the food, and to the moment you're living.
By the end of our time together, you'll have done more than visit Lyon. You'll have met some of the people who give the city its flavour, shared in one of its favourite traditions, and experienced the art de vivre that makes France so beloved around the world.
