Cantine Mothia are located just a stone's throw from the island of the same name, which experienced the glorious past of the Phoenician people, and from the enchanting scenery of the Marsala salt pans. Cantine Mothia was founded in 1997 by Francesco Bonomo, a Sicilian entrepreneur in the wine industry. The careful selection of the grapes, together with the meticulous attention paid to each stage of the production process, are the secrets behind the quality of Cantine Mothia's wines, as evidenced by the awards they have won in various wine competitions and their inclusion in the most important guides in the sector.
The baglio purchased by the Bonomo family in 1997 dates back to the 19th century, and renovation work began immediately, resulting in a masterful restoration and refurbishment. The typical features of the baglio include the imposing central door made of solid wood, surmounted by a finely decorated wrought-iron grille, the interior decorations in tuff, and the large inner courtyard. In the courtyard, you can also admire the 19th-century marble cobblestones, which still bear the marks of the carts that farmers used to transport grapes in the past. During the renovation of the old baglio, the technical side was not neglected: a winemaking area equipped with the latest technology and an ageing area with stainless steel tanks and oak barrels were created.
Thanks to the strategic geographical location and fascinating architecture of our baglio, Cantine Mothia is well suited to welcoming groups of tourists, offering them an enjoyable and interesting tour of the winery. Our welcome includes a tour of the winery, the main stops of which are: the inner courtyard, the vinification and ageing areas with stainless steel and wooden containers, the historic barrel cellar made of fine oak, where the fascinating history of Marsala wine is recounted, and finally, the tasting room. The stop in the tasting room allows visitors to sample our wines paired with typical Sicilian products.
