Overview

The Petitcodiac River has shaped Moncton for at least 2,000 years, and its storey is far stranger than most visitors expect. On this walking tour, you'll follow the river from Indigenous portage routes and Acadian rebellion to shipbuilding boomtowns and a causeway that nearly killed the river entirely. Starting at Bore Park, you'll learn how the Bay of Fundy pushes 100 billion tonnes of water twice daily into the Petitcodiac, sending a visible wave rolling upstream at 13 kilometres an hour. From there, walk riverbanks where Acadian rebels ambushed British soldiers, hear how Mi'kmaq travellers rode the tidal bore in birch bark canoes, and meet Molly Kool North America's first licensed female sea captain, who fought prejudice occasionally by brandishing a timber log as a weapon. The tour ends back at Bore Park, where the last stand of the tragic Acadian rebel leader Beausoleil comes to a fitting but melancholy end.

Treitz Haus - Visitor Info Centre / Centre d'info touristique (Pass by)

Visit Treitz Haus, the city's oldest building, dating to 1769 and likely built with Acadian craftsmanship. Step inside this historic structure, now serving visitors as the city's information centre.

Moncton Public Library (Pass by)

Pass the Moncton Public Library, tracing its roots back to 1913 despite a history of fires and relocations. Spot the statue of Northrop Frye out front, honouring the acclaimed literary critic who once called Moncton home.

Marche Moncton Market (Pass by)

Explore the Marché Moncton Market, a bustling public market that first opened its doors on December 6, 1884. Wander through over 100 vendors offering local produce, crafts, and food, a tradition that's grown steadily for more than a century.

RCMP Monument (Pass by)

Visit this bronze memorial honouring Constables Doug Larche, Dave Ross, and Fabrice Gevaudan, killed in the line of duty in 2014. Notice the personal touches at its base, including imprints of running shoes and family fingerprints, added to honour the men behind the uniforms.

La Bikery Cooperative (Pass by)

Pass La Bikery Co-operative, a community bicycle centre offering rentals, repairs, and a recycle-a-bike programme right on the riverfront trail. Discover how this grassroots co-op has helped build a cycling culture in Moncton since 2012.
