Begin your journey with a convenient pickup from Matsumoto Station. Relax and enjoy the scenic drive to the Kita-Yatsugatake Pilatus Ropeway, which carries you swiftly from the forested base area to the alpine summit zone in a single ascent. In just a few minutes, the scenery transforms into a deep winter landscape of snow, wind, and wide-open views.
From the top station, begin your snowshoe walk towards Ameike Pond. Walk at a relaxed pace through pristine forests, gentle ridgelines, and open snowy terrain. The snow absorbs sound, creating a rare stillness where even footsteps feel deliberate.
Along the way, your guide shares insights into the winter environment—trees shaped by snow, animal tracks, frozen water, and subtle changes in terrain—while allowing plenty of space for quiet observation. The route and pace are adjusted according to weather and snow conditions, making the experience suitable for beginners and first-time snowshoe users.
Frequent pauses allow time for rest, photography, or simply standing still and listening to the silence. In winter, Ameike Pond becomes a frozen, icy lake, surrounded by silent conifer forests. The surface of the pond is often completely frozen, creating a striking and minimal winter scene unique to North Yatsugatake. This calm, snow-covered setting is one of the most memorable highlights of the tour.
At Ameike Pond, the guide staff prepares and serves a handmade, warm lunch. Enjoying a hot meal beside a frozen pond, surrounded by snow and quiet forest, offers deep comfort and warmth. This simple but carefully prepared lunch provides energy and creates a peaceful moment to rest, reflect, and fully absorb the winter atmosphere.
After the snowshoe walk, visit a local onsen (hot spring). Soaking in mineral-rich hot water after exposure to cold is a deeply restorative Japanese ritual. Muscles relax, fatigue fades, and the contrast between snow and hot water creates a uniquely calming experience. Your guide will explain onsen etiquette in advance so even first-time visitors can enjoy the experience comfortably and confidently.
After the onsen, choose to visit a cosy local izakaya, a casual Japanese pub where locals gather to unwind. This part of the experience is optional and may be skipped if you prefer to return earlier or enjoy free time. For guests who join, one drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) is provided by the guide as a complimentary service. Any additional food or drinks ordered at the izakaya are not included in the tour price and are paid directly by each guest.
