Step inside the workshop and be welcomed by the gentle scent of natural wood and a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Begin by choosing your favourite wood from more than 12 types of natural wood, including hinoki cypress, cedar, maple, and cherry blossom. Each type of wood has its own colour, grain, and hardness, and the time spent choosing—wondering which one suits you best—is already a special part of the experience.

Once you have selected your wood, shape your chopsticks using a traditional Japanese woodworking tool called a kanna (hand plane), followed by careful sanding. Even first-time participants, children, and those with no prior woodworking experience can enjoy the workshop with confidence, as the friendly staff provide step-by-step guidance throughout the process. English support is also available, making the workshop especially popular with international visitors and inbound group tours.

For the finishing touch, apply oil to bring out the natural colour and texture of the wood. At HASHI LAB Nara, you can choose one wood from 12 different types and create a one-of-a-kind pair of original chopsticks. These handmade chopsticks make a wonderful travel souvenir and are highly appreciated by couples creating matching pairs, families celebrating special trips, and friends looking for a meaningful keepsake.

The experience takes approximately 45 minutes, offering a rich and fulfilling activity that easily fits into your sightseeing schedule. In addition to individual guests, groups, school trips, corporate programmes, and inbound tours are warmly welcomed, making this a true hands-on experience that allows you to deeply connect with Japanese culture.

HASHI LAB Nara is more than just a place to make chopsticks. By touching the wood, shaping it with your own hands, and completing the final finish, you can truly feel the depth of Japan’s craftsmanship and the warmth of natural materials. Create unforgettable memories during your visit to Nara with this unique cultural experience, available only at HASHI LAB Nara.
