What you can expect

  • Dive deep into the poignant history of enslavement, contract labour, and the enduring legacy of Black Heritage in the thoroughbred horse racing industry with the “Journey to Jubilee” tour at Belle Meade. This 60-minute walking tour offers a comprehensive look at the lives of enslaved individuals from the plantation's inception in 1807 through the adoption of the 13th amendment in Tennessee in 1865.

Begin your journey inside the historic kitchen house, where you'll learn about the various skilled labourers who were enslaved at Belle Meade. As you walk through multiple points across the property, discover the harsh realities and inspiring perseverance of those who lived through this dark chapter of American history. The tour is grounded in extensive research from primary sources, aiming to honour and remember those whose stories have been forgotten.

The tour concludes with a complimentary wine tasting at the Belle Meade Winery for guests aged 21 and over, providing a moment to reflect on the experience. This tour is recommended for guests aged 12 and older due to the mature and sensitive nature of the content.
