The necropolis of Pantalica is a vast and suggestive archaeological naturalistic area in the province of Syracuse. The name derives from the Greek πάνταλίθος = place of stones or from the Arab buntarigah = place of caves. In 2005 the site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To understand the genesis you have to go far back in time ... even before the Greek colonisation, south-eastern Sicily was inhabited, now on the coastal plains now on the rugged mountains, by different populations, as evidenced by the impressive archaeological remains and the vast necropolis of caves of Pantalica, but the first human traces could date back several thousand years earlier with the first settlements of Homo Sapiens.
