Your day begins in Atri, a hilltop borgo that punches well above its weight artistically. Step inside the 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, where a breathtaking cycle of Renaissance frescoes by Andrea De Litio — often called the Sistine Chapel of Abruzzo — stops first-time visitors in their tracks. Your guide brings the frescoes to life before leading you into the Museo Capitolare, included in your tour, for an even deeper look at the town's extraordinary artistic heritage. Afterwards, lose yourself in Atri's old town at your own pace: artisan workshops selling olive oil, Montepulciano wine, hand-rolled pasta, and local honey line every corner, ready for browsing (and tasting, if the shopkeeper offers).

A scenic 25-minute drive brings you to Penne, a perfectly preserved medieval borgo perched above the Valle del Tavo and built almost entirely from rose-hued brick. A guided walk through the historic centre takes you past the civic tower, Palazzo della Dogana, and a maze of ancient lanes that feel frozen in time. Then it's your turn to slow down: enjoy free time to sit down for lunch at one of Penne's excellent local restaurants (own expense) and try arrosticini, Abruzzo's iconic lamb skewers grilled over a traditional furnacella, paired with a glass of Montepulciano.

Before heading back, take a final stroll down Corso Emilio Alessandrini, where ceramics, cured meats, cheeses, and local wine shops make for the perfect last taste of Abruzzo.
