Begin your journey in Piazza Bastreri, an elegant square by the sea, easily accessible from the boat dock and parking area. From here, enjoy the view of the famous Palazzata a Mare, a row of narrow, pastel-colored tower-houses lining the waterfront. These medieval “tower houses” are not just architectural monuments but symbols of Portovenere’s maritime heritage, and are one of the most photographed spots in the village.
Pass through the historic Porta del Borgo, an ancient fortified gate that once regulated access to the town centre. Still standing in its stone glory, this gate opens into the enchanting carruggio (narrow alley) of Portovenere, lined with shops, arches, and unexpected sea views that tell the storey of centuries of maritime commerce and tradition.
Next, visit the imposing Doria Castle, a Genoese fortress perched on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Poets. Marvel at its crenellated walls, watch towers, and panoramic terraces offering breathtaking views of the Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto islands, as well as the entire Gulf. This spot is perfect for capturing unforgettable photographs and appreciating the natural beauty.
Continuing along the panoramic path, reach the Romanesque Church of San Lorenzo, a medieval gem. Inside, find the miraculous 14th-century painting of the Madonna Bianca (White Madonna), surrounded by serene Romanesque architecture. The stone facade, elegant portal, and small bell tower reflect the harmonious style of the period. The church also holds deep spiritual significance for the local community. During the annual Festa della Madonna Bianca, the village is illuminated with candles, lanterns, and torches, creating one of Italy’s most enchanting traditional celebrations.
Nearby stands the stunning Church of San Pietro, perched on a rocky promontory above the sea. Its striking black-and-white Gothic-Genoese facade stands out against the azure Ligurian waters. Inside, discover a single nave with vaulted ceilings, late Gothic frescoes, and a serene atmosphere that connects the community to the spiritual life of the sea. The church’s unique location and intimate setting make it a truly magical experience.
After exploring the churches, descend towards the famous Grotta di Lord Byron, a natural terrace suspended between cliffs and the horizon. This enchanting spot is linked to the famous English poet, Lord Byron, who once found inspiration for his works here. The views from here are mesmerising, with the sea stretching out before you and the surrounding cliffs adding to the tranquil, mysterious atmosphere.
As the tour concludes, walk back to the waterfront, soaking in the stunning views and scenic spots. This immersive experience blends Porto Venere’s rich history, architecture, and Mediterranean landscape, leaving you with lasting memories of this extraordinary place and its breathtaking views over the Gulf of Poets.
