What you can expect
Discover the heritage and culture of Portuguese azulejo tiles on this private full-day adventure that combines a tour of the National Azulejo Museum and a hands-on workshop. Paint your own beautiful tile, then learn about history of the iconic art form through a diverse museum collection.
Azulejo tiles can be found everywhere in Lisbon, from churches to underground stations. Beautiful and functional, the tiles are used to maintain temperature in homes and are an iconic part of the city. This private tour takes you to Azeitão for a hands-on experience in the Azulejos de Azeitão workshop. Learn the traditional, centuries-old techniques that are still employed today to create the tiles, and get the chance to paint your own. You can ship your tile to your hotel or home address once it's fired and finished as a one-of-a-kind souvenir.
After your workshop, head back to Lisbon and admire some of the most impressive displays of azulejos around the city. Make your way to the National Azulejo Museum, which is located in the former Madre de Deus Convent. Marvel at the splendid Baroque interior of the church, whose intricate pieces come together to form a perfect whole work of art. In the museum itself, peruse an extensive collection of azulejo tiles from the 15th century to modern times, and from a number of schools around the globe. Here, you can explore the rich history of the tiles and their cultural significance before heading back to your hotel.
