The drive from Sarajevo to Srebrenica is approximately 2 and a half hours. We will visit Srebrenica Memorial Centre and the city of Srebrenica. Srebrenica genocide was the massacre which happened in July 1995 in which more than 8000 Bosniaks, mostly men, but women and children as well, who lived in and around Srebrenica, were killed. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia declared that the massacre in Srebrenica was a genocide. Potočari, a small place near Srebrenica, was declared a safe zone by the Dutch UN units. However, Bosnian Serb units overran the protection zone and went on to massacre over 8000 Bosniaks. There is video footage from that period, played in the Memorial Centre, which shows executions. The victims were buried in mass graves, and to this day, many victims are still not identified nor found. Memorial was officially opened by the former US President Bill Clinton in September 2003. That same year in March, the first 600 victims were identified.
