Built in the Middle Ages and later expanded and fortified, it was the residence of the Marquises of Monferrato and an important defensive structure of the city. The Church of Santa Caterina, overlooking Piazza Castello, is one of the most important examples of Baroque architecture in Casale Monferrato. Officially dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, it is known by the name of Santa Caterina for its ancient link with the Dominican nuns. Via Saffi
