What you can expect

The San Isidro Lighthouse and Fuerte Bulnes are two of the most beautiful and history-rich places in all of southern Patagonia, and on this full-day excursion, you'll visit both from Punta Arenas. Start before dawn to arrive at the lighthouse when the first light breaks over the Strait of Magellan, and end the afternoon exploring the ruins of the first permanent Chilean settlement in the region. A day that combines nature, trekking, and historical heritage in a single day.

Sunrise trek to the San Isidro Lighthouse
The San Isidro Lighthouse is one of the southernmost operating lighthouses in the world. The access trek runs through sub-Antarctic forests and along the Patagonian coast, and is best enjoyed at sunrise, when the light begins to illuminate the Strait and the clouds with warm tones. The return hike takes approximately four hours and includes views of the Strait of Magellan, Dawson Island, and the Darwin Mountains from the base of the lighthouse.

Fuerte Bulnes:
Founded in 1843, Fuerte Bulnes was the first official establishment of the Chilean State in the Strait of Magellan. Rebuilt on its original site within the Parque del Estrecho, the fort retains its stilts, cannons, chapel, and wooden walls, and gives an insight into how the first settlers lived in one of the most remote territories on the planet. The afternoon guided visit is the ideal add-on to the morning's physical exertion: history and context for everything that surrounded that landscape.
