What you can expect

Come and discover the unique underground world of Piton de la Fournaise on an active tour of the lava tunnels of Reunion Island, an opportunity to learn more about the island's volcanology and geology!

Visiting the lava caves located between Sainte-Rose and Saint-Philippe, in the southeast of Reunion Island, is one of the must-do things to do around the Piton de la Fournaise volcano.

In a small group and in a friendly atmosphere, you will go on an active tour of the lava tubes of Piton de la Fournaise with a live guide for approximately 4 hours.
During this underground exploration, you will experience 100 metres of ascent and descent with a highest point at 400 metres, and you will be able to observe many exceptional geological formations: lava stalactites, lava benches, stalagmites, vitrified walls, and skylights.

For this caving excursion near Piton de la Fournaise, you will be supervised by a state-certified instructor, a mountain and caving tour leader, who will ensure your safety and that you come out of this underground experience in Reunion Island feeling amazed. You will immerse yourself in a world that is completely different from the outside, which will allow you to better understand the process of how a volcano and a lava tube are formed!

So don't hesitate and embark on this caving trip in the lava tubes of Piton de la Fournaise on the island of Réunion!

Itinerary

  • Meet the instructor in the designated car park

  • Once equipped with a helmet, an individual headlamp, knee pads, and gloves if you wish, a 15-minute walk on the roped lava to reach the entrance to the tunnel, with a description of the surrounding landscape by the live guide

  • Enter the lava tunnels with a few initial explanations given by your tour leader while you get used to the darkness

  • Discover the lava caves: ceilings from which dark chocolate seems to be flowing (stalactites), lava benches, forests of stalagmites, a “dodo”, a “shark”, and many other things if you let your imagination run wild. Very often standing, sometimes bent over or crouching, you will slowly progress through the tunnels at your own pace

  • After 2 to 3 hours, you will leave the lava tunnels to end the experience

For photography enthusiasts, the team will take the time to help you create your own photo report.
