Get ready for a sensory adventure that takes you through the absolute best of Latvian culinary heritage. This 2-hour guided tour is carefully crafted to show you the fascinating contrast between Riga’s bustling daily life and its historic charm, all through the lens of local food.
To ensure a highly personal and premium experience, we keep our groups small with a maximum of 15 participants. Furthermore, for groups of 8 or more, we provide a professional wireless Tour Guide System (audio headsets). This guarantees you will hear every fascinating storey and historical fact perfectly, whether navigating the lively, buzzing market pavilions or strolling through the streets.
Throughout the tour, your palate will experience a symphony of 25 distinct flavours and taste nuances—spanning from sweet and savoury to smoky, fermented, and herbal.
Our portions are thoughtfully curated: they are designed as bite-sized, premium tastings, allowing you to fully focus on the beautiful presentation, rich aromas, and authentic textures without feeling overwhelmed. While it is a tasting journey rather than an all-you-can-eat buffet, the vast variety of foods ensures that most of our guests leave the tour feeling wonderfully satisfied and comfortably full!
Please note: Exploring a foreign food culture means embarking on an adventure. Some traditional flavours might be entirely new, sharp, or unusual to your palate—and that is completely normal! We invite our food tour participants to come with an open mind, step slightly out of their culinary comfort zone, and embrace the authentic tastes that locals truly love.
We begin with a stroll outside the monumental Riga Central Market—housed in historic Zeppelin hangars—before diving straight into the pavilions to taste the local stars:
• The Seafood Pavilion: Try traditional sprats and herring open-faced sandwiches (paired with fresh water to kickstart your palate).
• The Gourmet Corner: Sample 3 distinct types of rich hemp pesto.
•Enjoy a savoury, locally sourced chicken winglet, traditionally smoked over alder firewood by a beloved local producer (Rubeņi).
• The Cheese & Bakery Station: Taste 3 varieties of hard cheese, traditional caraway fresh cheese, and iconic crispy Lāču rye bread croutons flavoured with bacon and horseradish, all washed down with a glass of crisp, fermented Original Kvass.
After soaking up the market atmosphere, take a scenic 15-minute walk to the Old Town. Your guide will share captivating stories about the historic landmarks you pass along the way.
The tour culminates at a charming café right by the Town Hall Square (Rātslaukums) for a comforting sit-down meal served family-style. Tables are served in a cosy private room solely dedicated for participants of the tour.
This tour requires a minimum of 3 participants to operate. If there are fewer than 3 participants, we will offer you the option to rebook for the closest available tour, cancel your booking for a full refund, or upgrade to a private tour.
