What you can expect

Explore Mitla, an impressive Mixtec-Zapotec archaeological site, noted for its remarkably well-preserved geometric masonry. As you walk through its ruins, you'll discover why its name comes from Mictlan, a Nahuatl term meaning “underworld”, and its deep spiritual meaning.

Formerly an important ceremonial centre, Mitla features cross-shaped tombs, rows of imposing stone columns, and raised chambers decorated with elaborate designs. These spaces were used by the Zapotec high priests and reflect the site's importance as a centre for rituals and beliefs.

After touring the site, you can stroll through the cactus garden inside the archaeological park and enjoy the natural surroundings. Before you leave, visit the crafts market near the entrance, where local artisans offer traditional art and handmade products.
