Mamaduwanaby: Sacred Kogui Experience in the Sierra Nevada
Discover the Heart of the World Through an Authentic Indigenous Experience
Journey on horseback through the breathtaking landscapes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, home of the Kogui people, guardians of one of the world's oldest living indigenous cultures and a sacred territory recognised by UNESCO for its ancestral system of knowledge.
Mamaduwanaby is more than a horseback riding sightseeing tour. It is an authentic cultural and spiritual experience that invites you to discover the deep connection between nature, Indigenous wisdom, and one of Colombia's most extraordinary sacred places.
Your adventure begins at 8:00 AM in Río Piedras, where our local guides provide an introduction to horseback riding and explain the cultural significance of the journey. No prior riding experience is required.
Ride along ancient mountain trails, cross rivers, and climb to approximately 600 metres (1,970 ft) above sea level, surrounded by tropical forests and spectacular views. Enjoy fresh seasonal fruits and locally grown Colombian coffee while listening to the sounds of nature. Along the way, you may spot monkeys and colourful tropical birds, including the iconic toucan.
The highlight of the experience is Mamaduwanaby, an ancestral sacred stone decorated with ancient petroglyphs. Learn the stories behind the symbols of the three ancestral chiefs, the caiman, the heron, and the fish, and discover the spiritual connection between this sacred place and the mouth of the Río Piedras, according to Kogui tradition.
The journey continues to Sierra Quindío Farm, where you'll enjoy a traditional homemade Colombian lunch before relaxing by the swimming pool, surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.
The experience concludes between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, leaving you with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of the living heritage of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
