What you can expect
What you'll experience on the Columbus Lighthouse Tour
From the moment you arrive at the impressive Columbus Lighthouse, you'll feel history come to life right before your eyes. We'll meet you on the main esplanade, where you can admire this imposing Latin cross-shaped structure, designed to project a beam of light into the sky that can be seen from miles away. This monument, which combines modern elements and religious symbolism, was built in honour of the navigator Christopher Columbus, and its architecture alone is an unforgettable visual experience.
You'll start the tour outside with your guide, who'll give you a brief explanation about the design, the materials used, and the meaning of its shape. From here, you can take panoramic photos of the monument and the surroundings of Mirador del Este Park, and observe the magnitude of the building that symbolises the meeting of two worlds.
Then, you'll go inside the lighthouse, where the supposed mausoleum with the symbolic remains of Christopher Columbus is located. You'll be surprised to see how natural light plays with white marble and concrete, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. Here, you'll hear about the historical controversies surrounding Columbus's remains and how this place became one of the most representative spaces in Dominican and Latin American history.
Moving on to the permanent exhibition halls, you'll symbolically travel around the world without leaving the building: each country in America and Europe that participated in the discovery of the New World has its own room or showcase, with historical gifts, flags, coins, ancient books, and religious or cultural art. You can walk through this international corridor, stopping in the rooms that most appeal to you, as if you were walking through a diplomatic exhibition of humanity.
Later, you'll check out the temporary exhibitions, which usually include contemporary art, historical photography, indigenous art, or archaeological samples. This space changes frequently, which makes the tour always different, even if you've done it before.
At the end of the museum part, you'll have some free time to rest, take pictures, or visit the souvenir shop. You'll find unique items there, like postcards with images of the Lighthouse, Dominican history books, Larimar jewellery, and local handicrafts. You can also enjoy a small drink of mamajuana, the traditional Dominican drink made with rum, wine, and honey.
This tour isn't just a sightseeing trip. It's a total immersion in the historical and cultural identity of the Dominican Republic. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of the past, spectacular photos, and, above all, an experience you'll remember for a lifetime.
