Jing'an Temple is the origin of the name Jing'an District. It was built in 247 during the Three Kingdoms period and has a history of over 1700 years. It is located in the bustling commercial district of Nanjing West Road, surrounded by high-rise shopping centres.
The ancient temple combines Song style craftsmanship with Tibetan style. The main hall is made of Burmese teak wood, and the 18 metre Brahma pillar in front of the door is engraved with Su Shi's handwritten “Diamond Sutra”. There are abundant collections in the hall: 15 tonnes of pure silver Shakyamuni Buddha, millennium camphor wood carved Guanyin, 11 tonnes of Burmese jade Buddha, and an ancient bell from the Ming Dynasty; Behind stands the 63 metre Jing'an Tower, with its golden roof and copper tiles that are highly recognisable.
In the bustling city, the ancient temple is quiet and peaceful, where incense can be burned for blessings. Check in for the unique scenery of the golden roof of the ancient temple and the modern buildings in the same frame. The tour lasts about 60 to 90 minutes and is directly accessible by subway. It is a must visit cultural landmark in Shanghai. Attention: Photography is prohibited in the main hall. Please do not step on the threshold. Please keep quiet during the visit.
