The Doge's Palace was founded in 812 in Saint Mark’s Square and, for century was the residence of the Doge and, therefore, the centre of the Venetian power. The Palace is linked directly to the prisons by the most important bridge of the city: The Bridge of Sighs, so called because prisoners crossing the bridge would sigh at the prospect of seeing Venice for the last time.
