Erected during the dawn of Christianity, it served as a vital bastion and cultural nucleus in antiquity and the early Byzantine era. Archaeological discoveries on the hill of St. Spas chronicle five distinct phases, spanning from the early Iron Age to the Byzantine period, showcasing Thracian cult pits, a Roman fortress adorned with towers, and an early Christian church. The site was strategically chosen to oversee crucial ancient routes and treasures such as mineral springs and mines.
The ancient stronghold of “Tsari Mali Grad” hosts exhibitions of prehistoric relics, ceramics, numismatics, and military reenactments, painting a vivid picture of life and culture in late antiquity. By the IV century, the hill of St. Spas transformed into an essential Christian centre, as illustrated by the early Christian baptistery nestled in the northern pastophorium’s apse. As part of the illustrious E4 route, it invites explorers along eco-trails bearing remnants of the Roman era.
