    Originally founded in the Meiji era, our theatre survived wars and became the last Taishu Engeki theatre in Tokyo. Today, it continues its legacy as a beloved home of Taishu Engeki, offering visitors a rare chance to experience a living cultural tradition.

    Taishu Engeki is performed by travelling actor troupes who train from a young age and live like family. Their passion shines through every performance, creating shows filled with emotion, humour, and heart.

    One of the theater’s greatest charms is its intimate atmosphere. Performers tend to come down from the stage and walk among the audience to interact and connect with guests, during their performances!

    Enjoy a show, where artists perform to both traditional and modern music, and wear eyecatching costumes as onnagata (female impersonators). Graceful fan performances and thrilling sword artistry make the show exciting, even if you don’t speak Japanese.

    With new performances every day, every visit offers something fresh and unforgettable. Whether it’s your first time in Japan or your tenth, the Asakusa Mokubakan promises a unique cultural experience you won’t find anywhere else.

    Performance Schedule (2 shows every day):
    ･1st Show: Programme start/Door open at 1:30 pm / Show starts at ~2:00 pm
    ･2nd Show: Programme start/Door open at 7:00 pm / Show starts at ~7:30 pm

    *Since one of the unique aspects of Taishu Engeki is that the performance changes completely each day, the show itself may occasionally start up to 15 minutes earlier or later.

    During the waiting time: A snack bar is available offering small snacks and refreshments (cash only). Eating and drinking during the show is perfectly fine in Taishu Engeki, so feel free to enjoy a snack during the performance. This is also a good time to take a quick toilet break.
