What you can expect

Begin your day with a pickup from the JR Shinjuku West Exit in Tokyo. Travel to Tochigi Prefecture, located about 100 kilometres north of Tokyo.

Arrive at Wakayama Farm, a bamboo forest. Enjoy walking through one of the largest bamboo forests in Japan, located away from the crowds of major tourist spots.

After about a 1-hour visit, stop at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After lunch, head to Nikko Toshogu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Explore the Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period. Admire the buildings on the premises, renowned for their highly elaborate carvings, created with the finest craftsmanship of the 17th century.

See the most iconic structure, Yomei-mon, the gate leading to the inner enclosure. It is nicknamed “Higurashi-mon” (the “all-day gate”), as you can admire its intricate carvings for hours without getting bored.

After approximately 1.5 hours of sightseeing at Nikko Toshogu, head back to JR Shinjuku Station.
