ABSEIL & ABSEIL PLUS EXPERIENCE
On this tour, you will explore a 550-metre-long underground World War II fortress and experience the thrill of abseiling – descending a natural rock face with a rope under professional guidance.
The fortress was never completed, creating a unique space where man-made military architecture blends with natural rock formations. Once forgotten and hidden from view, it was only recently rediscovered, restored, and opened for visitors.
Depending on your comfort level, you can choose between two versions of the experience: Abseil or Abseil Plus.
ABSEIL
This option includes a guided tour of the underground fortress San Giovanni combined with one or two abseiling descents of varying difficulty.
You will start with an introduction to abseiling techniques and equipment, followed by a practice session on a horizontal surface and a demonstration by your instructors.
After that, you descend a vertical natural rock face and enter the underground concrete chambers of the fortress. Inside, you explore the tunnels and halls while learning about the site’s history, enhanced by immersive storytelling and special effects.
Both abseil variations are beginner-friendly and fully supported by experienced instructors. Depending on your confidence, you can choose between an easier walking descent or a more challenging vertical variation.
ABSEIL PLUS
This extended version includes everything from the Abseil experience, plus an additional abseiling descent inside the fortress.
In addition to the first two descents, you will also try a more demanding abseil on a cascading natural rock section inside the fortress. For those who feel confident, there is also an option to experience a simultaneous paired descent.
This version allows you to gradually build confidence, starting with easier descents before progressing to more challenging sections, always under full instructor supervision.
Important: Non-slip footwear is mandatory for this experience.
GOOD TO KNOW
No previous abseiling experience is required for either version. All activities are carried out with full safety equipment and guidance from licensed professional instructors. You can decide on-site which level of descent you feel comfortable attempting.
The experience begins with a full safety briefing, equipment introduction, and practice session on a safe horizontal surface. After the descent, you enter the underground fortress, explore its vast chambers, and experience immersive effects that bring the history of the site to life.
At the end of the tour, a special audio-visual surprise awaits, followed by a unique challenge: turning off your headlamps and navigating through complete darkness, just as early explorers once experienced it.
Finally, you will be comfortably transported back to the starting point by air-conditioned van, where the experience concludes with a relaxed gathering and a glass of wine.
