The hike to the summit craters of Etna is a unique experience that will take you to the heart of the highest active volcano in Europe, amidst lunar landscapes, breathtaking views, and direct contact with the power of nature.
Departure is from Rifugio Sapienza, on the south side of Mount Etna, which is the meeting point with the licensed volcanology guide. After an initial briefing on the itinerary and safety conditions, you will board the Etna cable car, which will take you comfortably to an altitude of 2,500 metres (8,202 feet), already offering stunning views of the lava flows and the Sicilian coast.
From here, the adventure continues aboard off-road vehicles that traverse a spectacular volcanic landscape up to an altitude of 2,850 metres (9,350 feet). This section allows you to get a close-up view of extinct craters, recent lava flows, and a landscape shaped by the most recent eruptions.
Once you reach the starting point of the trek, the hike towards the summit area begins. The route winds through volcanic terrain, black sand, and lava slag, accompanied by a guide who will explain the geological history of Mount Etna, its most significant eruptions, and the characteristics of the area. The trek takes you up to an altitude of approximately 10,800 feet, near the summit craters, where you can admire an extraordinary landscape of steam, vibrant colours, and 360-degree views stretching from the inland mountains to the sea.
The descent follows an alternative and captivating route, passing by the striking Barbagallo craters, which offer an additional perspective on Etna’s volcanic activity and morphology. This section allows you to enjoy a truly comprehensive experience, traversing a variety of consistently spectacular environments.
After the downhill trek, you will head back towards the cable car station and then descend again to Rifugio Sapienza, the final destination of the hike.
This is an intense and thrilling experience designed for those who want to discover Mount Etna in all its grandeur, accompanied by expert guides and enhanced by unforgettable views. Upon request, drone video footage can be captured to allow you to take home a truly special memento.
