What you can expect

  • Trikala, Theopetra and Meteora Private Tour

    1. Departure from Trikala & Theopetra Cave

Our comfortable minivan will pick you up from your hotel in Trikala. Your English-speaking tour leader will share fascinating facts about the area so that when you arrive at the Cave and the Museum of Theopetra—home to an unbroken 130,000-year timeline of humanity in Thessaly—you will be ready to uncover all its secrets!

    1. Arrival in Kalabaka: A Hidden Time Capsule

Upon arriving in Kalabaka, you won't rush straight up to the clifftop monasteries of Meteora like everyone else. Instead, you will discover a hidden gem sitting quietly in the old quarter at the foot of the giant rocks: the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
Built in the 10th–11th century AD over a 4th-century Christian basilica—which itself was built over an ancient pagan temple—this church is a literal time capsule. It is a rare survivor of a long-forgotten architectural tradition (the last in Greece featuring a massive central pulpit) and stands as a stubborn bastion of Greek identity and Christian faith through the many vicissitudes that the people of Kalabaka lived through.

    1. The Hermitages of Kastraki

The next stop takes you to a secluded area of Kastraki, where history still lingers. Here, you will see early hermitages of 14th century,AD, the ruined monastery of St. George Mandilas, the Church of Doupiani, and the Holy Spirit Rock—the very area where monastic asceticism first began in the 10th century AD.

    1. The Monasteries of Meteora

Next, you will step inside one of the six actifs monasteries,(or maybe 2 small, if you want),while also viewing all of them from the most spectacular vantage points across the landscape.

Note: Of course, if you don't want to visit a monastery inside, you can choose to do a short hike—the itinerary can be completely tailored with your tour leader!
**Each Tuesday the Theopetra Cave and the Museum are closed,so you have the possibility to see 2 big monasteries inside.

    1. Return Transfer
At the end of this personalised tour, the minivan will drop you back off at your hotel.
