Discover one of Valencia’s most surprising cultural and gastronomic experiences — a journey through 80 million years of history behind the tiny tuber that created horchata.
What do dinosaurs, our hominid ancestors, ancient civilisations such as Egypt, Greece and Rome, and historical figures like Napoleon, Don Quixote or Leonardo da Vinci have in common with the tigernut? This immersive experience takes place in Alboraya, the historic birthplace of the tigernut and horchata, in the millennia-old agricultural landscape that surrounds Valencia.
You will visit organic tigernut fields grown under the European Protected Designation of Origin “Chufa de Valencia.” Here you will discover how this humble crop has been cultivated for over a thousand years in the Valencian huerta, the historic irrigation system that also gave birth to the famous Tribunal de las Aguas and sustained the Central Market of Valencia.
The journey continues at Espai Món Orxata, a cultural space where you will discover surprising historical connections and see a unique collection of original artefacts and antiques dedicated to horchata.
Here you will also discover the storey of the traditional horchata street carts, the iconic ambulant vendors that have served horchata in Valencia’s streets and squares for more than 400 years — the oldest and most authentic way this drink has been shared with the public.
Finally, you will visit our artisan workshop, learn how authentic horchata is prepared, and enjoy a tasting of different types of freshly made horchata, accompanied by local traditional pastries.
Each participant receives a special gourmet gift kit including tigernuts, fartons and tigernut chocolate.
Join us to taste the true history of Valencia through its most iconic drink: horchata.
