Overview

A tour of the labyrinths. This tour will take you to visit three of the most beautiful labyrinths in the Veneto: the Labyrinth of the Monumental Garden of Valsanzibio, the labyrinth of the Castle of San Pelagio and the largest lavender labyrinth in Italy.

You can experience your tour as a playful, leisure experience among the intricate hedges and grassy corridors, or as an introspective experience, reflecting on the symbolism of the places you will visit. The three stages of the tour recall, in fact, the three stages of Dante's famous journey: hell, purgatory and paradise.

Activity itinerary

Garden of Villa Barbarigo
  • 2h 15m

The Labyrinth of the Monumental Garden of Valsanzibio. The first stop will be the centuries-old labyrinth of the Monumental Garden of Valsanzibio, created with six thousand evergreen box shrubs planted between 1664-1669. Designed by the architect Luigi Bernini following indications from San Gregorio Barbarigo, this labyrinth represents the arduous path of human perfectibility. You will proceed between the high boxwood walls, looking for the way out. There will be many shortcuts that will deceive you, leading you into one of the six dead ends, which symbolise the deadly vices of Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath and Envy, or into the vicious circle that represents Pride. The lesson that this labyrinth will leave you is that the right path is never the apparently shortest one. Once you get out of this "hellish" labyrinth you will be ready to face limbo.

The Castle of San Pelagio. Once you arrive at the Castle of San Pelagio, you will walk through the mirror labyrinth, a symbol of loss: along the way you risk losing your bearings and, for a visual game that creates a sense of alienation, you too. The labyrinth, single and without dead ends, represents purgatory, a spiral with a single exit. Once you understand the key to liberation, that is, retracing your steps, you will be ready for heaven.

A lavender labyrinth. The last labyrinth will take you to a celestial place, immersed in the green Venetian countryside where horses live according to the natural method. In this place of peace and silence you walk through a lavender labyrinth created based on the one created at Notre Dame de Chartes by the Knights Templar. Inebriated by the scent of this medicinal plant and free from all worries, you will conclude your journey knowing that the sometimes tortuous path of life is worth living to achieve your dreams and goals.
